FAQ
1. What are Himalayan Cheese Chews?
Himalayan Cheese Chews are a hard cheese chew for dogs. This long-lasting, easily digestible chew is a great alternative to rawhide or “body parts”. The chewing action also promotes oral health. Our chews are lactose, grain, gluten, soy, and corn free. They are made using a single ingredient- CHEESE. Himalayan Cheese Chews contain no artificial colours or flavouring.
2. Do they expire? I read that Himalayan Cheese Chews can become mouldy.
Yes - they do expire but after a LONG shelf life. Most chews can last 3 to 5 years when stored appropriately. Our softer range of Churro, Yum and yakyPUFF have a shelf life of 18 months. All chews should be kept in an airtight container, avoiding extreme heat or cold weather. When chews are exposed to too much moisture, they can mould. On the opposite end, when stored in too cold of temperatures, the chews can lose moisture and become brittle.
3. Are Himalayan Cheese Chews good for dogs?
Our Himalayan Cheese Chews are great for dogs! They're an alternate source of protein and helps provide mental stimulation along with healthy gums and teeth.
4. How long will Himalayan Cheese Chews last?
The Original and Jughead Chews are long-lasting and can last your pup hours, days or even weeks - the exact duration is dependent on your dog's chewing style. In general, our chews are known to last up to 7 times longer than a bully stick. Churro and Yum Chews have a softer density more like dental chews and are meant to be consumed in a single session.
5. Why are some chews darker or lighter in colour?
This is what we call the hues of chews! Colour can vary depending on the location of the chew in the smoker. A darker colour indicates that the chew was closer to smoke while a lighter colour indicates it was further away. Occasionally, you may even see little dark freckles along the chews. This is from moisture build-up within the containers – little bits of liquid smoke drip down onto the chews enhancing the flavour that much more for your pup!
6. Why do some chews smell stronger than others?
Smokiness can vary depending on the location and what type of “smokehouse” the chew was smoked in. We have many farmers and herdsmen around the world with a variety of smokehouses; some are thatched huts, some are smoked over an open fire and some smokehouses are completely enclosed in an industrial fashion. The enclosure determines the strength of smoky aroma in our chews.
7. Are your chews still made from yak’s milk? Many other companies have “100% yak milk”.
There is no way to guarantee any yak chew is made from 100% yak milk. Our chews have always contained both yak and cow's milk from farmers and herdsmen abroad. Our in-house, Washington state made chews are 100% cow's milk.
8. Cheese is in many of your products, will it upset my dog’s stomach?
No. When given intermittently, cheese should not upset your dog’s stomach. Our cheese is lactose-free, making it easily digestible.
9. Is Himalayan Dog Chew digestible?
Himalayan Dog Chews are all natural and easily digestible.
10. What products are good for my older or younger dog?
Older and young dogs would do well with our Bone, Churro, Yum Chews as well as the light and crunchy yakyPUFF and yakyCHARMS. Because our Bone Chews are hand-pressed into moulds, the texture is softer than The Original Chews. The addition of vegetable glycerin in Churro and Yum makes a softer density that's easier for older or younger pups to chew.
11. Is it normal for my dog's gum to bleed when chewing on a dental chew?
Yes, in some cases bleeding may occur. Like humans, dogs' gums will bleed if there is a build-up of tartar on the teeth. Bleeding will reduce the more the bone is chewed, and oral gum hygiene improves. Should you be concerned please contact your vet.
